My parents dropped me off for the evening service at SBCC. Dana was the emcee and he shared that on this day back in 1618, Johannes Kepler discovered the third law of planetary motion, which is the squares of the orbital periods of planets are directly proportional to the cubes of the semi-major axes of their orbits. Hmmm.
Pastor Gary continued his series of “National Treasure: God’s Book of Secrets” with the Mystery of Death. He mentioned that as we use the euphemism of “passing away” as a substitute for death, so does the Bible. But the Bible often speaks of it as “falling asleep”. He gave examples of Lazarus in John 11 and Stephen in Acts 7. He also differentiated it from the “falling asleep” that many of us do during his sermon.
He talked about how our spirits are separate from our physical bodies and that when our earthly bodies die, our spirits will go to heaven or to hell. Jesus was allowed by God to die for our sins, but we have to believe in Christ in order for our spirits to go to heaven when we die.
After the service, I met with Michelle and Kathy, who were headed for the 36th Annual Spaghetti Dinner, presented by the Torrance Fire Department as a charity fundraiser, although I don’t think that they were going there for the noodles.
I made my way over to the tech booth to prep for the Faith Lessons class. Tonight was Lesson 4: Confronting Evil, and was moderated by Steve T, who surprised us all by wearing a shirt with buttons on it. I pointed this out to Pastor Gary, who responded that he was more amazed that Steve was wearing shoes.
The lesson went well, although Pastor Nathan rearranged the booth setup, so it was a little challenging in moving between the pc and the soundboard for the different stages of the lesson plan. Steve did a good job.
Mike & Carol had me home by 9:30pm.
A YEAR AGO TODAY: My father came by for a visit.
A word about my blog .....
I'm using this blog to keep notes on my life and experiences, plus to keep track of my own recovery from a stroke (December 2006).
For those of you who were not aware, my brother, John, died on February 10, 2010. His remains were cremated and interred at Green Hills Memorial Park.
COMMENTS ARE ENCOURAGED, WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED.
