A word about my blog .....

I'm using this blog to keep notes on my life and experiences, plus to keep track of my own recovery from a stroke (December 2006).

For those of you who were not aware, my brother, John, died on February 10, 2010. His remains were cremated and interred at Green Hills Memorial Park.

COMMENTS ARE ENCOURAGED, WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED.

0523 turf walkin'

Jim Y came by this morning, picked me up, and we went to Liberty Park for walking exercise. During the workout, I tried a bit on grass. The surface was firm, but uneven. It was challenging and I figured that if I could get comfortable walking on grass, then pavement would be easier. Also, if I fell, it wouldn’t hurt much, though that wasn’t a selling point.

For lunch, Jim suggested the buffet at a local 99 Ranch market. On the way there, we passed a store named “Standard Sweets & Snacks”. I guess they save a bunch on marketing, by not having to explain what they sell. But they’re kinda locked in, as it also limits them on what they can sell. If they ever decide to sell lawn furniture, they’re screwed!

0521 the laramie project

Randi came by after her work and picked me up on her way to her other interest. You see, she’s an actress and has been in plays for a long time. This is the closing weekend for her latest show, “The Laramie Project”, is presented by Theatre Out and performed at Hunger Artists Theater in Fullerton.

By the way, Randi is a cousin on my mother’s side, so don’t get any funny ideas.

The performance is a dramatization of the interviews by Moises Kaufman, the playwright, and members of The Tectonic Theater Project. completed after the murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998. The murder was thought to be the result of a hate crime, because the young man in question was gay.

The play gives the audience an insight to the thoughts and words of the people of Laramie, It’s very thought-provoking and touches all the nerves as you see each of the interviews in snippets and delivered in rapid-fire bites. The play is in three acts and the 2.5 hours go by quickly.

After the play, Randi drove me home. I thought the trip would take 20-30 minutes. She made it in 15. I think the tires touched the pavement only twice.

0517 the love begins

Sam picked me up in the morning, and we made it to third service at SBCC. Pastor Gary started up on the “40 Days of Love”, although we aren’t supposed to start our daily devotional readings until next weekend. His message was “It’s All About Love” and he focused on how love matters most. One verse he read from was I Corinthians 13:13, which says “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

At one point, he talked about the love of music and the love of dance, and reminisced about the time he was able to get some of the regulars together for a hip-hop routine. The video is below.

After service, I met with my lifegroup, Koinonia, just to chat and fellowship. Some of our members weren’t able to make it.

0516 finally finished

My bible study got together after the service for our study of Revelation. The original plan was to break up chapter 22 into two parts, but Steve T was facilitating and put the two parts together, so we were able to finish up the book that night.

Our next study will cover the book of Isaiah, but the group decided to delay the start of the study until July 18th, because of the church-wide participation in the “40 Days of Love” and some of our study group members would be leading small groups during the same time for six weeks.

Gary H wasn’t able to make it, but said that he was finished with college and will be able to join us the next time. I told him that we were taking some time off and will be starting on July 18th. He told me that was the same weekend he would be starting school again. Oh well!

0509 party!

The family got together for a birthday party/lunch to celebrate my brother John’s 51st birthday. A transportation service brought him home for a few hours and it was great to see him again.

As the others were getting lunch prepared, John and I talked and caught up. Well, I talked and he listened, since we aren’t able to communicate directly.

Cousin Patty came in for a few minutes. Her family lives near the nursing home where he’s at, so she visits him regularly. She asked him if he has been doing the yoga exercises that she taught him, and they went through some of them. Then she turned to me and said that I should do yoga, too.

She showed me a couple of moves and I told her that getting down was not a problem. Getting back up, now that’s where the problem lies. She told me that maybe yoga isn’t meant for me. At least, not yet.

The others called out that lunch was ready, so I turned to John and asked if he was hungry. For his response, I told him that one finger would mean “yes”, and two fingers would mean “no”.

His response? Five fingers. I looked at Patty and she just shrugged.

We moved to the front room and met with the rest of the family. We put John in the center so that everyone could talk to him. Mother bought some decorations at a store and hung them up. She also found a banner that read “Happy Birthday!” and hung it over the door. What she didn’t see was the “21st” that was attached. Everyone else saw it. I think John saw it, too.

Time flew by fast. At 1pm, we realized that John would be picked up in a half-hour and we hadn’t gotten around to the cake. So we gathered the family for a picture with John and the cake. None of us were ready for cake, but my sister’s kids were. They were a bit disappointed when they heard we were only taking pictures now.

The cake was cut and served an hour later and we found out that it was spice inside. The decoration on top was a basketball court (John is a Lakers fan) and it was nicely done.

The gathering broke up a few hours later.

0502 almost done!

After the service, I met with my bible study group. We only meet on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, after the service. We’ve met regularly since 2005 and have gone through studies on Ephesians, I John, II John, III John, and Jude. We got around the “lifegroup” requirement by making sure that all participants are part of a regular lifegroup and we only meet twice a month. We meet in the kitchen for several reasons, one of which makes it easier for me to access.

Someone came in tonight to get something from one of the cabinets. As he was leaving, he said that he was sorry for disrupting our lifegroup meeting. One of the study group members said, “It’s not a lifegroup. It’s a bible study group.”

He replied, “What’s the difference?”

The group member responded, “We don’t have to like each other.” Before you get shocked, please understand that all of us have been friends long before we got the bible study together. So we all laughed

We’re on the last chapter of Revelation and the group has decided to study Isaiah next. Another friend commented that we must have a strong desire because Isaiah is about three times longer than Revelation.

Just to give you an idea of the timeframe .... we started our study of Revelation in 2006.

0502 almost made it

My father dropped me off for the evening service at SBCC. My therapist wanted me to practice some of the step-management techniques that I was taught (see the 4/30 post) so I gave it a try on the steps going up to the church patio. I was one step from the top when Ken walked up and said, “Here, let me get that walker out of your way ...”

Fortunately, I was able to waive him off in time.
